Margaret Welty
First and foremost I've learned that I CAN draw!
I grew up wanting to draw, but always thought I couldn't, so I never really tried. Margaret changed that. I have to admit it, I was apprehensive at first. I had never met Margaret before and that fear as a child lingered in my head saying, "Are you nuts? You're going to embarrass yourself".
But I was wrong.
Margaret has a way of teaching without preaching. She has taught me so much. I've learned to see! Drawing is one tool that really teaches you to see. I used to drive looking through the glass to get to my destination. Now I notice the sky, clouds, the rain, the landscape ... seeing all the colors in a field whether it is green during spring or full of dried up weeds from summer.
I see things that I've looked at everyday and now I see so much more. People would be a little more pleasant to be around if everyone drew. Before Margaret's class I would look at art with a closed mind. I would see a piece and say, "I could do that, or what the heck is that? What were they thinking?". Margaret has taught me not to judge, but to just see!

I would highly recommend Margaret Welty's class to others. Her way of teaching might be described as perfect balance. While we learn new skills, we are also building upon past abilities and experiences. There is amazing energy in the room, but we are able to relax and be in touch with our own creativity. She gives students freedom and flexibility.
She explains why certain elements of art are necessary and insists that there is no wrong way to incorporate them. She teaches us to coordinate our mind, hands, eyes and spirit and allows us to develop in a way that makes each of us and each work of art unique. She inspires self-confidence and an appreciation of the skills and techniques of those around us. Her positive attitude the entire room and raises our expectations of ourselves.
I have gained insight and have learned to really see things in a new way. She has encouraged me to let go of self-criticism and to allow the unknown to relate to me. I feel that I have benefited as a human being as well as an artist.
